Living and working in Makkah

A single professional should budget around SAR 7,800 per month here, excluding school fees.

Entry to Makkah is restricted to Muslims. This is not a formality: it is enforced at the approaches to the city, and it decides whether a role here is open to you at all before anything else about the job matters. If you are not Muslim, a Makkah-based post is not something to negotiate around — look at Jeddah, which is roughly an hour and a half away and where many organisations with Makkah operations keep their corporate functions.

Who is hiring

Hospitality at a scale that exists almost nowhere else — hotel groups operating thousands of rooms with occupancy patterns driven by the pilgrimage calendar rather than a business-travel cycle. Alongside that: crowd and transport management, healthcare, facilities and construction, and the large services organisations that support Hajj and Umrah.

Experience here reads distinctively on a CV precisely because the operational scale is unusual.

The working year

The rhythm of the city is the pilgrimage calendar. Hajj season is the most demanding period in the Saudi hospitality industry, and Ramadan brings the Umrah peak. Ask directly what your hours, leave restrictions and on-site expectations look like during those weeks, because an annual leave policy means something different in a city where two periods of the year are effectively blackout.

Housing and daily life

Accommodation is frequently provided or arranged by the employer, particularly in hospitality — which removes the annual-lease problem but makes the quality of what is provided worth asking about in specifics.

Before you accept

  • What are the working patterns during Hajj and Ramadan, and how is the additional load compensated?
  • Is accommodation provided, where, and shared or individual?
  • Is the role Makkah-based year-round, or Jeddah-based with Makkah deployment?
