Living and working in Yanbu

A single professional should budget around SAR 7,200 per month here, excluding school fees.

An industrial city on the Red Sea coast, planned and administered by the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu — which makes it unusual: the industrial area, the residential city and the services between them were designed as one thing rather than grown into each other.

Who is hiring

Refining and petrochemicals, port and terminal operations, power and desalination, and the contracting, inspection and maintenance firms around them. Roles here are overwhelmingly technical: process, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, HSE, and the project management over the top.

Housing and daily life

Housing is usually provided or heavily subsidised through the industrial employers, and the Royal Commission areas are well-serviced by Saudi industrial-city standards. The coast is a genuine amenity — diving on this stretch of the Red Sea is excellent and uncrowded.

What Yanbu does not have is a large city's choice. Retail, schooling and social life are limited compared with Jeddah, which is a few hours south and is where most residents go for a weekend.

Family and schooling

International schooling exists but the choice is narrow. Families who need a specific curriculum should confirm a place before accepting, not after.

Before you accept

  • Is accommodation inside the Royal Commission area or in the old city?
  • What is the shift pattern, and is it rotational?
  • If you have school-age children, is there a place in a school teaching your curriculum?
